A canopy can be open or enclosed.
A closed canopy keeps the light over the tank - and I think both the tank and the critters/corals "look" better with an enclosed unit.
An open is possible - but will allow light to "spread-out" into the room. Still possible and sometimes practical.
My back is open on my canopy. I heard for fans to work, and I have read your fan posts and I agree, that the canopy must be fully enclosed. Also are the new 3 speed icecaps worth the money?
Thanks

I believe that if you have your fans mounted so they blow warm air out of the canopy, and allow cooler air to enter - that they are much more efficient at doing so if the canopy is enclosed.
Wherever there's an opening "vent" will be the area that has the most incoming cooler air pulled in.
Otherwise - with an open canopy or hood - you're just trying to move the warm air around - and hopefully do so in a way that keeps it from contacting the water surface.
The Icecap multispeed fans are trick !
They work well and move a lot of air ...... they better !!
i just use fans from radio shack. to me a fan is a fan. as long as it does what a fan is supposed to, then i won't complain. plus i'd rathe spend the 6 dollars compared to 25 and up for the "fish brand" fans.
Just a little side note ... the European's have been setting up "open" aquariums for years with great success. The preferred reef lighting over there is now Mh pendents hanging over the tank. Just a little tid-bit I've picked up while crawling through the web.
