fantasy tank and gruesome question

Hello everyone,
I am writing a story in which a rich guy has a big saltwater aquarium. So I got on this site and picked out some gorgeous expensive fish to be in it. But then I noticed that some of my hypothetical fish might not be compatible with each other. And I couldn't figure out what else other than fish would be in the tank. So here are my questions.
1. If you could have any combination of fish you wanted in a tank, money no object, what would you have? The tank can be as large as would fit well in a large living room, but not too huge because it has to be fragile enough to break. See question 2.
2. Is an aquarium likely to smash if a heavy lamp fell on it from a height of 6 to 8 feet?
3. And here's the really gruesome question, please remember these are hypothetical fish, so none will be harmed in the writing of this story. How long would it before the fish died out of water? Would some of them die before others? This is important because the guy is supposed to hear the aquarium smashing and come down to see all the fish dead on the floor. And then I read that some freshwater fish can live twenty minutes.
So this is my quest. To find this information and to finish this story before the fiction class meets next Thursday. Any and all responses greatly appreciated. I will post the finished story on the web if any are interested. Thanks so much.

Naso Tangs and Unicorn Tangs are beautiful.
Fish will die in a very few minutes. Maybe your story could have the character coming out to the tank quickly and he sees a few of his fish flopping around in puddles and others with very labored breathing.
If you need something to survive a snowflake eel can live outside of the water for quite a long time. Snowflake eels are basically compatable with anything that won't fit into its mouth.
I'd like to see the story when you are finished. I also enjoy writing and have had several pieces published.
Good luck!

Also, a "LARGE" "fantasy" when breaking.... would almost sound like an explosion coming from a distance. It would be a VERY shaky BOOOOOOOM.
And there would be a lot more than just fish on the floor... rock/sand...etc EVERYWHERE.
Even if the fish were $50,000 in total, someone who could afford that would have 400+G in the tank itself.... not to mention the HOUSE.
I'd say the fish would be the last thing on their minds at the moment of impact.

sounds like a cool story.
I can tell you that when our subdivision was flooding this week...last thing on my mind was the tanks, the tanks are alot easier to replace than say a house!
But dont get discouraged as you are creating a story, so get in the creative swing and get that pen flowing!

this is a story though so i dont know why everybody is tryinng to keep it real , yes replacing a house would suck , but a house doesnt have to be replaced in this case

Hey,
This is great, thanks. I will write it up and post it here. Yeah, I don't want to ruin his house because it will distract from the narrative. But I am getting a lot of ideas from your responses.
The fish do not have to be large so much as expensive, although I imagine these categories overlap considerably.
Cheers,

I saw a Hawaiin Dragon Eel on this site...on sale for $800. Naso Tangs are awesome and pretty $$$, also just about any of the Adult Angels are pricy and very beautiful. Don't forget about coral, those little clownfishes clinging to the anenomes they've hosted while laying on the floor...gasping their last breaths....can't wait to see your story.
