Fast water evaporation.

For some reason my water seems to be evaporating at a pretty fast rate of speed. I am adding like 2 gallons to my tank every other day. The lights have been off in the tank due to the tank not being cycled yet, and the live rock curing. Any ideals as to why it's evaporating so quickly and how to stop it? Thanks in advance.

If its a 65g like it says in your profile then its normal, slight differences depending on humidity, glass tops, oxygen in the water or temps, ect.....I add 5 gls every other day to my 150g

Prolly open. My 10 is open looses like a gallon ever 3 days. My 29 has a glass top and losses like a gallon every 5 days.

In the winter months, evaporation occurs even faster because of the dry, cool air. I'd say nothing to be alarmed about.
My 125 with a 40 sump would loose 3-5 gallons per day in the cold winter and in the hot summers. Now with an auto-topoff I don't have to worry about evaporation at all as it continually feeds the tank with fresh RO water.

I have a 55 gallon and I lose only like 2-3 gallons of water a week. My tank has an opened top to. Well I suppose it is only the different climate.

you live in Dayton so you have the same crappy cold weather as I do. I add about 1 gallon or so every few days with no tops. It's the cold and dry that increases evaporation levels

yeah it seems like the colder it gets , the more I add. I am adding around 2.5 gallons per day in my 180 right now. Normally it is a little under 2 gallons per day.

I have a similar set up and lose the same amount. I need to set up an auto topoff so I don't have to add water to it every day.

Ok. Well thanks guys. I guess it just seemed like a bit much to me. I also had heard that the only water that evaporates from an SW tank is water that is freshwater. Like has no salinity (LFS worker).. Guess I won't worry about it then. Thanks again. Appreciate the fast replies. Oh and it is a 65gal and I have glass tops.

True, only water evaporates. Salt does not. Thats why you MUST do top offs with fresh ro/di water not sw.

I add a gallon a day or so in my 29-gallon w/10-gallon sump/fuge. I run 2 65-watt actinics and a 250-watt metal halide. I have a wooden canopy over the tank.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the amount of evaporation also depends on surface irritation. The more turbulance, the more evaporation.

actually hot, at hot enough temperatures, salt evaporates too, but we are talking end of the world temps now hehe
