What is your favorite reef tang?
I was looking at some the other day, and I really like the kole tang. I might put one in my 180. I did not have luck getting my last tang to eat, so I am a little leary.

I'm trying with this Achilles Tang I have now and it is not easy keeping these fellas happy. I'm going on month two here shortly.
Sohal and Clown Tangs are both beautiful, followed by powder blues and achilles IMO. Sohals and clowns both get pretty big, quite quickly actually and are more aggressive. Powder blues and Achilles are probably top of the hard to keep list though. There is also a semi-rare black tang that , Preuss' in Lansing, has one in their house tank, I think they're a couple hundred bucks, but they're like a yellow tang, but Solid Black, all the way around, with a white barb on the back, very nice looking, plus you don't see them all the time.
If you feed a lot like I did, my 3'' sohal went to 6'' in a very short period of time. IMO they need a 8' tank or more.

I like the Kole, purple, and the Powder blue. I have had all 3 at some point in time. Powder and Kole together, a few years ago and the purple now(definatly the most hostile) but all have been great fish. I would love to get a Tomini tang saw them in FL while on vacation and thet are way cool and just like the Kole. HTH MIKE

I LOVE the black, they are so beautiful. I saw one before, but it had ick so I did not get it. I like the sohals too, but I think that I would rather get a kole. I can't find one around here. I might do some driving to sting ray bay. I heard they have 2. I have never been there. I know it is FAR. I like the color of the clowns, but I have heard they are one of the harder ones to keep. I don't really want anything to agressive in my tank. I am considering making it a reef.
Tony have you ordered online before???

I saw that black tang at Pruess last week, pretty cool. I have always loved the coloration of the Achilles. I have been unsucessful with one already unfortunately, and am leary of getting another. Kole tangs are cool. IMO there are few tangs that aren't.

Blacks are beautiful. I have seen a couple at a LFS. You are right, the picture doesn't do them justice.
My personal favorite tang is the purple. Mine is gorgeous, peaceful and very social. I have read that they are one of the most hardy and usually peaceful of the tangs. But then again they very as michael can attest.

I have been doing research, on tangs. I am still hooked on the kole tang. Anyone had luck keeping them? I heard that they have a different diet then most tangs. they are algea, and detritus eaters. I am thinking of picking one up. I would like to know if anyone has any experience with these.
Thanks,
Lbabe

Hey Leopard,
I had a Kole tang, their diet isn't much different than most tangs. They do eat large amounts of film algea off the glass and when that is gone mine ate Nori just like the rest. They are very hardy and readily eat in the aquarium. I'd reccommend one. HTH

What problems are you having with the Achilles, Tony?

He won't touch frozen, very rarely does he eat it. He eats zooplankton and seaweed for the most part, that's it. I feed 7 different types of frozen, all soaked in garlic/vitamins.
Fishtanker, yours looks beautiful, nice work.
Leopard, I try not to buy much online, like to support the locals, I only buy equipment online if the price is a good savings. Kole tangs are easy, keep good water quality and feed lots of different foods and definitely feed seaweed and you'll be fine. I get seaweed at world market in Novi, I get huge sheets for like 3 bucks, plus they're top quality.

mine usually only eats Julian Sprungs sea veggies, he loves that stuff. he wont touch pellets or flake. Occasionally he'll try my frozen homemade food but not that much. Good luck with yours, they are truely awesome fish.

I know you didn't ask, but just to add to the discussion, my purple tang eats anything I put in the tank. I feed him brine shrimp, flakes, frozen, macro algae (don't know the name of it), etc. He just loves to eat. He wouldn't touch my hair algae though when I had an outbreak a while ago.

Thanks guys. I was just wondering. i had a blue tang, and I could not get it to eat. I had every kind of food you could think of. I feed my angel in my reef nori, and she LOVES that. So I figured the tang would love it!!! Now I just need to find one around here.
Thanks guys,
L babe
