Dadgumit!
I brought home a beautiful hairy mushroom rock tonight. As much as I'd love to be bragging and posting pics.............I no sooner got the thing settled in my tank before i hear this snapping sound.
PLEASE tell me how to know what the heck is causing that sound. *praying, pistol shrimp, pistol shrimp*

Ouch sorry to hear. Had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago, or potentially the same thing.
Picked up some yellow zoo's. Acclimated them, placed them in my tank, than noticed a mantis peaking out of a crevice in the rock the corals were on!

sounds like mntis to me. have you ever put a pistol shrimp in your tank. If not go to the local fish store and get the traps.

5 scarlet hermits

I'm not totally certain what it is causing the noise. I'm pretty much camped out here tankside but haven't gotten site of the fella yet. Is it possible that they are too small to see. Are the mantis nocturnal?
Guess I should go for the trap asap?

Reached in, grabbed the rock with the mantis and pulled it out. Than placed it in a 29g I had set up with nothing really in it. I doubt they'd be to small to see. However atleast mine was extremely shy and hid in the rock most of the time.

well, I'm glad you got it anyway. I have a hospital/ qt tank but I used copper in it at one time and am afraid to put my mushroom rock there now. I guess I'll go about it the hard way
