That is so cool! Did you try to do this and if so how? I have 2 dusters in my reef and would love them to multiply.

Feather duster's multiply by 'molting' their feathers. The feathers act like seeds and they spread around the tank and into the filtration system or the refugium because they go with the current.

Ummm... nope. The crown traps food and is unrelated to reproduction. They are broadcast spawners.

i wasn't trying to this but they have multiplied pretty quickly, i've had them in the fuge for about 3-4 months. i have great water params now with the fuge and dsb going, trates are at 0 or barely detectable.

From what I remember in my marine biology class feather dusters can reproduce two ways, asexually and sexually. Sexually they send gametes into the water where the fertilized eggs turn into larvae that then eventually settle some place. Asexually they can do a kind of budding proccess.

Yes! But not using the crown. Thank you for clarifying :)

Wow, once again my LFS proved me wrong. He went on about what a sight it is to see the feathers go off. I knew it trapped food but wow...

most LFS lie about certian thing to make themsleves look superior. they also lie because of a wonderful thing know as "comission":D . when they sell you something they get extra money. anyways. im not sure, but i believe the better lighting, the faster the process moves. at my LFS, they had just set up a brand new second coral tank. the first light they used was very basic and nothing was really on the rocks, except for a crap load of pods! then the put one of the best lighting systems you could buy on it and all these little featherdusters spawned out of the rocks. now i could be worng, and if i am i would want bang guy or someone to correct it for me because he seems to know his stuff:p. nice featherduster farm btw. :D

Makes sense to me. More light = more Phytoplankton = More Featherdusters

Gametes are sperm cells correct?
I think that came from last semesters science class. I might have been sleeping, I'm not sure:p
