I have a feather duster that has flopped over and is slow to retract when touched. Do you think he is a gonner?

I doubt if it's in trouble. the tube probably just rolled over causing it aim downward, it also might be making it hard for the worm to withdraw into it's tube.

i don't think thats a problem. if he doesn't like it he will get out of his tube and move to a better home.
i lost my featherduster for about 2 weeks. couldn't see him or nothing. come to find out he retreated deep into his tube, shed all of his feathers and was growning new ones. he still like the rock he is on and he is comming out now.
if the tube isn't attached to the rock, you might want to plant him straight up and down in the sand. i wish i did that to mine, but his tube won't come loose from the rock and i don't want to break it.

A week or so ago I was doing a water change in my tank and when I broke siphon a large volume of water gushed back into my tank making a massive wave right on top of my feather duster. He broke off the rock he was attached to. I placed him back on the rock and a day later he was pointing downward like yours. Another day later I found him all the way off the rock. My feather duster now lives on the sand at the bottom of the tank and seems to be doing fine.

i wouldnt think the feather duster cares what way his feathers are facing, as long as there's enough flow going through them.
