Figure out the head end! then place as close to where you want it as you can and let it attach in the general area then leave it alone. For food, it's a filter feeder so a little zoo-
plankton or phyto plankton every other day. "A little". good luck hope this helps!

I place mine in between the rocks or in the sand. I also feed mine phyto twice a week, although some say this isn't necessary.

I bought a green one and it moves around more than my kids!
No matter where I tried to keep it moves where it wants. Now my brown and whites seem to stay just about where I put it... just about..... LOL it keeps moving its feathers to face the back of the tank, shy I guess.

What roots? They don't have roots.
As to where you place it, it doesn't matter much, as long as it is a medium flow area. Be aware that it may leave its tube because it doesn't like where you put it. If this happens, just wait to see where it builds its new tube, and if you do not like where it is, try changing your powerheads around, to see if this will get it to face the front of the tank, but I don't suggest doing this alot, since it may stress the worm.

The little white ones are a completely different species than your big one, and their appearence doesn't have anything to do with where you placed your FD.

If you wanna get it to face toward the front of the tank, you may want to move the powerheads around. The change in flow may cause it to turnto face the front of the tank.

If it built its new tube there, then that means that is where it feels is the best place for it...

By "roots", I think fish fatty means the little brown branch looking things that sometimes appear on my feathers tubes.

 ... Not trying to be smart aleck-y but the roots are on the opposite end of the head (the feather part). Place the roots between rocks so that the rocks secure it from flopping around. I just today moved mine because I did a reshuffle of rocks and he's on the sand but is wedged semi loosely under a live rock. BOY he loved that! His feathers opened as soon as my hand left the tank and has only gone back in when the crab walked over the top of him! The current he's in is stronger than where he was before. But he's not in like turbo current either. His feathers are constantly moving and when he closes his tube still sways just a bit in the current. (Hope that helps as a description.)
They are a bit shy but if you accidentally put them where they really want to be they get over the shyness pronto! He will move if he really hates where he is and you won't see him for a few days but he'll let you know when he's happy.

dictionary.com "Root- n.
1. The usually underground portion of a plant that lacks buds, leaves, or nodes and serves as support, draws minerals and water from the surrounding soil, and sometimes stores food."
Feather dusters are types of worms, so they can't have roots...
