I bought this huge feather duster. The first couple days he was comming out but now nothing. is this common or should I be worried. Ok I've seen the sailfin tang nip at the stalk but never went for the actual worm.

See what it does at night. If the tang is nipping at it it may just be scared. My black one pretty much only comes out at night.

It's not uncommon for them to hide for extended periods when they're disturbed.

The tang is probably just picking at the algae on or around the tube...Can you still see the featherduster in the tube?

I saw some of it peeking out today but it never did extend totaly. I did notice that when he was extended two days ago, the tang never bothered it at all. I looked last night while the moon lights were on still didn't see him come out.

salineity 1.021, Nitrate 0.1, PH 8.1. I have him sitting in a sand bed under some live rock where sort of a dim part of the tank. I've read they are light sensitive. It's 120 gal tank have a wave maker and three power heads so should be getting plenty flow.

Your salinity is a little low...IDK if that has anything to do with it though...you can bring it up SLOWLY...by adding salt to your top off...
Make sure it isn't getting TOO much flow....too much is not good either

yeah, I"ll bring up the salt level slowly see what happens. And again ,like you said, may be just adjusting. I just know that when I first put him in the tank he was out alot the first day, after that sorta went back in and that was it. guess either way, not an expensive loss if it never comes out again but just thought it was really cool looking.

He's getting some flow but where I have him, sorta between rocks in a cave of sorts. Don't seem to be getting too much to me. but I'll keep and eye on him to make sure. thank you so much.

and yes I am using a hydormeter
If you are able to....or as soon as you can, try to pick up a refractometer...It is much more accurate for testing salinity....Hydrometers stink...I had 3...none ever read the same, and when I finally got my refractometer I finally got a good and accurate reading.

Yeah,I was wondering how accurate the hydrometer was, I'll have to invest in a refractor then.
