Feather dusters?? Need ur helppp!!!!

I just got some feather dusters( from swf.com - good job guys)
Do i need to put the "roots" in the gravel? im pretty sure i do.
also will that stringy stuff keep coming off them not the actual feathers but like a silky stuff.

yeah mines in the rockwork as well, it is very healthy but ive never seen anything comeoff or out of it

and also sometimes they will spit out there feathers but dont throw them away because they do that sometimes when they are stress.Mine has done it once.Hope that helped,and also i just have mine buried in the sand.
