Feather Dusters

Can anyone give me a precise answer to my question of how to tell if a feather duster is dying/dead or just lost its feather crown?

Well, all that I know is that the feather "crown" is its gills, so, no gills no fish

As long as the tube part is intact, I think they can regenerate their crowns after a couple of weeks.

I have a feather duster that just recently threw his crown. He grew it back but for some reason his tube is starting o decay. The tube is falling apart, it is like a clear really brittle tube now. Anyone know the cause?

Do the feather duster's need any special lighting or can they be kept in a FOWLR tank that only has i light?

If your featherdusters tube is decaying I am not 100% sure but it is probably dieing sorry you may want to post a thread to ask and make sure.
In the feather dusters and lights. I have seen them under normal output before but I am not 100% sure google you ? or ask here on the board to make sure.

Feather Dusters need no special lighting since they are filter feeders. You will need to pick up some special food for them, I feed mine once a week and I can tell it really helps because I have tons of little dusters all over the place now.

What do you feed your feather duster bigbobsull?
I did notice the tube of my duster was getting clear, but that was due to my horrible camelback shrimp picking away at it. He is now gone to a new home.
I also had a hitch hiker crab in my tank that I actually seen pulling this duster behind a rock and munching on the tube. Fixed him too.
So now my duster is just fine, the areas that the crab and shrimp dismantled grew back so as long as there is a worm inside and nothing in your tank picking away at the tube you should be okay.
One very interesting thing to do is at night when all lights are out take a flashlight and see what is in your tank at night, you might be amazed....

My feather duster threw his feathers ounce b4 and it took them about two weeks to grow back. Now the feathers are about twice as thick as they were b4 and they look great. As far as feeding them goes, I have had mine for about 6 months in a 20 gallon and have never put anything in the water to feed him. I guess he just feeds of of things that are already in my water. I also have about 15-20 small feather dusters on my rocks and I usaully find a new one every week. Also I know Yellow tangs pick at feather dusters because I seen one at my friends house picking at his feather duster.

I have never fed my feather duster either. I do notice some flakes that wil fall into the center of the duster and then it quickly will close up. So I don't see a reason to feed them and they are filter feeders too. I was just curious to see what was being fed to them on that post by bigbobsull.
I have also noticed that I have all sorts of the tiny feather dusters now appearing on my live rock....:jumping: That camelback shrimp just kept evething munched down. I am so happy that I don't have him anymore. I have things popping up now and it looks like my xenia "might" come back also..:cheer:
One thing I have noticed is now that I have increased my snails to five margaritas from only having one my glass is absolutley spotless. I was scraping it before every few days so it was nice and clear, not anymore.....

Well you dont have to feed your dusters if they are the only filter feeders in the tank but when you get alot of filter feeders you should supplement some phytoplankton in your water and let the powerheads and what not carrie it around just a way to make sure there is food for them to eat.

Hi,
My feather duster had tons of alge growing all over him.
I was trying to clean the algee off and was gently doing so.
The Feather duster was in his tube when I was cleaning him. When I picked him up, all of a sudden the feather head and worm body sled out and the feather and worm body is out in the tank
The body buried itself in the rock and the feather duster looks ok.
But the tube is really weird looking.
Is there anything inside the tube....?
Will the feather duster find the tube and go back inside?
What is going on with him?
