Feeding Coral Banded Shrimp

I have been feeding my CBS small pieces of coctail shrimp but lately I've been having ammonia problems. I just realized that the CBS doesn't eat all of the shrimp and the leftovers cause my tank to go into a small cycle. What should I feed him? The flakes don't make it to the bottom of the tank and he would never venture far from his cave to get them. I would just let him eat algae but he ripped most of the fins off of my bicolor angel and it died. That's when I started feeding him shrimp because I thought maybe the algae wasn't enough. Thanks for any help.

I have two CBS and they do venture out to get some food when I feed. They scavenge around the bottom of the tank and pick things off of the sand. They catch frozen brine shrimp as it floats past and they have eaten shrimp that I have feed to the bottom dwellers. (I do the same as you and every few days I toss in a few pieces of cocktail shrimp for the hermits and the CBS to pick at) My CBS will pick on fish if they get hungry but I try to keep them fed.

I only have one fish, though, so I feed him directly. There is absolutely no waste; nothing gets past the greedy clown fish. When I get more fish and "feed the tank" in general I'm sure the shrimp will get plenty to eat. But for now should I just let him eat algae? When you put pieces of shrimp in the tank for the hermits to eat, do they eat it all? How big of pieces do you put in?

Do you have any LR? and if so, how much? I never really directly feed my CBS. He eats off the LR and LS, and will occasionally catch some flakes or frozen brine that I feed my clown(I've only got 1 fish too). I've had my CBS for about 3 months and so far he's been molting about once every 2 weeks. He's really been showing some growth, so he must be doing alright. Point is, if you've got a fair amount of LR, I wouldn't really worry about directly feeding the shrimp. :D

I have 60 lbs of rock and a DSB in my 55 gallon tank. I've had the shrimp about the same amount of time as yours but mine has only molted once (that I know of).

I feed my CBS with sinking shrimp pellets. They are put out by
wardley.
I bought them at Wal-mart. What he doesnt ear, The crabs, blenny, and stars eat. My cleaner shrimp eats them too.

Mine seems to pick at the lr, and it also eats off of the cc. Today as a matter of fact he fed off of a $5 damsel. I think it was going to die anyway. He had not been eating for about 4 days. I think he probably went to the floor of the tank and was real slow and the cbs got him. Or maybe he just passed and the cbs took it as food. who knows. This is the second $ meal this cbs has had. a week ago it was eating my $4 scarlet crab. I just hope it was already dead. I don't think I am starving him at all. He eats dry food when I feed the fish, he constantly is eating off the cc and lr.

Shrimp are opportunistic feeders, whether that means slow moving sick fish, algae, or leftover food. Don't worry, he'll find something to eat.:D
