Feeding Lionfish

I purchased a Pterois antennata about a week ago. (Very good deal). Anyhow he has not eat a thing. Right now he is in a quarantine tank. What have people had luck with? No LFS in the area has Ghost Shrimp, and I really do not want to use freshwater feeders. Is there a frozen food that the lion will love? I have tried raw shrimp, slightly cooked shrimp, Mysis and Brine.
Thank You,

:happyfish Hi, and welcome. Lionfish unfortunately can be hard to get to eating. There are several things you can do, and sounds like your doing some of them. I learned a trick when I couldn't get my volitan lion to eat, and it worked for me but may not for you. Here it is: I got a piece of shrimp, any will do, leave part of the tail on, and rap a piece of sewing string around the tail, not too tight so it won't come off ever, but tight enough, that when he goes for it, it will come off. Just dangle it in front of him, keeping your body as far away from him as possible, and make it seem alive. Either give a quick jerk to dislodge the fish, when he goes for it, or let him take it. The only other thing I know of that works, is to get very small goldfish, or mollies, or grass shrimp or feeder crabs. Mollies can be aclimated to saltwater I've heard, so they last longer. I kept my fish away from the lions food, so he had every oportunity. Once he is feeding, HOPEFULLY, then start him on Formula 1, frozen food. One thing that really helps too is if you put in a piece of scallop, and another fish goes after it, and keeps pecking on it, and makes it seem alive, sometimes it perks lions interest in the food thinking it's alive. Hope this helped, it may not work for you, but it worked for me, and though it may be off the wall, it does work. Good luck with your lion, and hopefully he'll make it.

I have a lion fish and I just got it eating. What I did was bought some frozen silversides, like whole ones and not the small ones. I pinched it by the tail, dipped it in the water and wiggled it around. It worked for me, and its easier than tying it to a string every day. Anyway, yea, they mostly like live food, cuz they are like serious predators, ya know? Also, ghost shrimp might work. If you get them on ----, they are sent, most of them with eggs. Anyway, good luck with the lion, and make all of the food look alive.

Well my aquarium is 22inches tall and he usually hides when I open the glass, so I dont think he will come to the surface and get the fish. Thank you for your advice.

i feed my dwarf krill if that helps. he loves it. i just poke it with a shishkabob skewer (wooden) and stick it in the tank and he gulps them down. he won't eat silversides.

They sell a clear feeding stick at the LFS for $2.50. It might work better since they won't be able to see the skewer. You just want to thread some shrimp or silversides on the end, and make it "swim" through the water. Hopefully that will work, let us know.
