"Feeding" LS/LR

I have read that Eric Borneman and others use some sort of feeding system to keep his LS/LR healthy. They mention using some sinking pellets to feed the organisms in the LS.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what I should use to do this?

You can do that if you want... any sinking pellets will do. However, the best way to feed rock and sand is a strong water current and no mechanical filtration.

Do you suggest adding any shrimp or anything while I wait for my system to get as mature as possible. Or should I just let it "grow" for a while.
Also, if I don't add any other livestock to the tank is there any danger that the ls/lr could "die"?

The only Mechanical filtration are filter feeders like the Yellow Sponge you saw in the other post.
