need some advice...lots of reef experience minimal seahrose
I put a yellow H erectus in my tank...no yellow coloration just greys and blacks. He's been in 2 days, no feeding yet. He was reportedly eating frozen mysis. How long does it usually take unitl they feed? Should I by some live brine to jump start her? Are the green ricordeas seahorse safe?
thanks for the help

Ok, back up, is the seahorse in a reef tank? If so , might not work as most reefs and reef creatures require a much higher flow rate than a seahorse can sustain. When you say reported eating frozen mysis, reported how, from a friend, LFS, internet seller? Normally the seahorse will be ready to eat within the first 8 hours.

ER, I have to totally agree with Darth. When I released my pair of kudas, they were eating (pods) within 10 minutes, and haven't missed a meal of frozen mysis yet. Hope you can get yours eating. Maybe try turning off all equipment during meal times. I've found that by doing that, I can keep a closer eye on what my horses are consuming...which is a LOT

Good luck to you.

The tank has very low to no flow at the half the seahorse stays...was purchased at this site and looks well, just doesn't show much interest in the mysis or brine yet...

Appreciate it, will pick some up, probably have to be mondady stuck in the ed until then. Assuming she won't starve.
Assuming she does well I was going to pair her up given I hear they do better in groups...do you think 2 3 inch horses in a 24g tank with 2 small perculas is too much? nh3 no2 are zero... no3 runs 3-5ppm

This is a very good way to "jump start" their feeding habits. Slowly introduce frozen mysis with it and the transition should be fairly smooth.

Could it be that she's snicking enough pods and just isn't hungry when you try to supplement...just a thought. Watch her when she's out and about and note when she's in hunting mode. I've been told that when they snick rocks for pods, you won't necessarily see the pod they're snicking. Again, good luck.

Never heard of a horse turning down mysis after it has been snicking pods all day....Mine never turned down food unless they were sick.

Mmmmm, yeah, you're correct...it was just a thought that this might be the case with being new to the environment...I know mine ate frozen immediately as well, plus they're always out hunting pods. IDK.

She stays attached to a plastic plant which I have as a temporary holdfast and doesn't venture out. It is next to a piece of rock and I have noticed her make a few moves that might indicate she is picking stuff off the rock

I'm not sure that mixing seahorses with perculas is a great idea. Make sure they are not picking or intimidating her at all. The color will come to her as soon as she feels comfortable in her new home.

The perculas hang out at the top of the tank and never go near the horse. She just stays at the bottom of the plastic plant, never leaves it...still not eating, will try live brine in the am when I can get some. Her color is good and water chemistry is good,
She may be breathing fast...I'm not sure what the normal resp rate is for a seahorse

Can somebody help me with the "garlic soaking"..
I have an H erectus introdueced to a tank 4 days ago. nh3 0 no2 0 no3 5ppm
she stays tightly attached to the bottom of the plastic palnt and never leaves. Her color is good...she may be breathing fast but I'm not really sure what normal rate is....she won't eat any frozen mysis even when placed right at her snout with a tube. I am going to try live brine in the am but thought I might give the garlic method a try...how is it done?
thanks in advance

get the horse eating luive food first,....this is the big key. Four days the horse is eating something in your tank.

stinging corals are dangerous and make sure it isn't in with anything that could be hurt by hitching.
also, it should be in a species only, they do better in those. reef tanks arent always the best for them either.
i'd suggest doing alot more research about keeping that type of seahorse. seahorse.org is a great site.
