I am trying to fight off hair algea. i have metal halide lighting and would like to cut down the time. what is the shortest i can cut back with out hurting my corals and anemone

Dunno, but I'd be more worried about too many phosphates instead of too long a photoperiod.

what type of filtration do you have? skimmer? turn over? how often water changes and how much? what type of water do you use?
