Fighting Conch

I was wondering if anybody uses them and if so, do they do a good job of keeping your sand bed clean. Also how many do you recommend for a 45 gallon.

I have one in my 29, it eats any green algea I get. I stays in the sand while the lights are on but at night it's all over the place. It only stays in left side of the tank.

I have 4 of them in my tank. I love them the move all over the sand keeping it very clean. They bury themselves under the sand and stick there eyes out like periscopes on a submarine.

They sound cool I might look into getting one of them if my lfs can get them. What did you all pay for your conch if you do not mind me asking.

They say they will only grow to one inch. I don't think they would overturn your LR. The ones that I have do not even go on my LR.

fighting conchs can get 3 inches, wueens get much MUCH larger
and iMO do a lot of work on the sand, the general rule is one per 2 sq ft OF SAND(NO MORE), and they are neat to watch, when we put ours in the tank, they hopped around until they got to where thye wanted to be, it was so neat, and they seem to work all day long, from their shelteer in the sand, anD at night they dcome out and work more

my fighting conchs are great, although i have not seen them in a couple days because they usually stay buried during the day. they work like crazy though when they are out.

they dont actually fight but can flip anything over that may climb on them. also they have a tentalce in their shell that they can lash out that is very sharp and can cut like a knife. i read an article about a month ago that somebody picked one up and he ended up getting stitches from it. so basically their fighting conchs because they can handle themselves quite well. but they do not seem to be aggerssive toward other tank mates at all.

i was just wondering about the hermit crab thing. i guess if they tried the fight would be on huh? lol. i just got 2 yesterday and i just love them. they aren't supposed to get very big but they say to stay away from the queen conch...they get really big. i can already tell a difference on the sand where they are....and mine don't stay buried. they're right out in the open. yesterday they buried themselves for a while...but i've only seen it happen that one time.

i can understand why beth is angry (being that she is from the keys and the "conch republic"), but you can still get conch (mostly queen) from the bahamas. i am not 100 % sure, but i believe that there are some aquaculuture farms that raise conch for eating purposes. i do know that the conch, fighting, queen, horse, helment, is slowly coming back in the keys after being nearly wiped out. but i doubt that harvesting will ever be legal again. and "true" conch fritters are tasty, this is coming from someone born and raised in the fla keys
