Filstar XP1 Question

Hi everyone,
I just added the xp1 to my tank for a mechanical/chemical filter.
It runs great, but the output pipe is shooting bubbles in my tank every 3-5 mins. I am not useing the spray bar method, I have the output pipe extended down into my tank, with the elbow end nozzel.
I have checked all connections to see if air is getting in, but all looks great, no leakes.
Any ideas what might be causing this? Thanks for the help,
Rob

Some how there is still some air that's going in there. Try shaking it around a bit to get all there air out.

With the filstar be sure to keep that thing clean. I had to take mine apart every week and clean the pads, otherwise you will have a large build up that will cause some water quality problems. I just finally unhooked it. I really didn't need it with the amount of LR, DSB, and good skimmer. As far as the bubbles go there is probably some air still in the canister. Did you let the water drain in and fill the canister before you started it up?

I followed the instructions to the letter. I unhooked it and filled up the canister with water, and shook it as suggested to get all the air out. Seems to be working now.
Thanks for all the help. Thanks for the warning on the pads. I will make sure I clean them once a week.
I plan on using it just to run Phos- sorb, or charcoal on occasion. I will probably take the pads out and run some Chemi-pure in it and use it for water circulation.
Thanks for all the help

Just a recommendation on that chem. media. Make sure to use high quality carbon and never charcoal, Kent Reef Carbon seems to work pretty good for me. I used to try to save money and get cheaper brands in bulk, but ended up with nothing but Phosphate problems and carbon dust all over the tank and choking out my live rock even after rinsing the carbon thoroughly. In most of my saltwater systems I run the Reef Carbon for one week out of each month. Also, for Phosphates there is a couple of new products out that claim to work many times better than the Phos-zorb. One is from ERI, but I'm not yet sure where to get it. Fritz makes a Phosphate removing medium that I've been using for awhile now that works very well and can be left in the filter without releasing the Phosphates back into the system. Otherwise, you'll be messing with that canister filter all the time. I don't remember if the Phos-zorb claims to be a leave in or not, but I do remeber using it in the past with almost no results. This left me to believe that either the stuff just didn't work or it did but leached the stuff back out before I could pull the pouches out. And lastly, good idea not to use the mech. pads, they'll trap all kinds of things and give you all the Phosphates you could ever want plus trap all the good critters trying to populate your DSB and LR. Good luck with it and have a happy New Year!

MykGillespie,
Thanks for the advice. I will check the filter pads and phosphate readings this weekend.
The filter would have been running for a full week.
Thanks again for the help. Happy New Year! :D
