Filter/algae/white worms(?) questions

Today at work, the saltwater aquarium had what looks like thin white hairs on the back side of the tank and larger ones (but not so many) on the live rock. From what I can tell, it doesn't move. Are they worms or what? What can we do to get rid of them?
The aquarium looked horrible a few weeks ago but with weekly water changes, it's looking better. Still a lot of hair algae (I think) on the rock and not sure yet what to do about that. It's a 300 gallon acrylic with a homemade wet/dry system. It drains into what looks like a small pond liner, then through a wire mesh and into the other side of the pond liner where there's a protein skimmer and then the water goes back into the tank. Only one puffer and one eel right now until we get things under better control. However, we do have some coralline algae growth on the tank.
Is this a good enough filtration system?
What are these white worm things?
Any suggestions on the hair(?) algae?
Thanks for the help (can you tell I'm new at this?)
