Ok the fish tank guy came over tonight to check over our equipment. He is going to set up our tank on Friday for us. We have a 125 gallon with two corner overflows. We bought a Pro wet/dry filter rated for 150 gallons with a built in protein skimmer and then I bought the pump return kit that has a mag drive pump rated at 700gallons. The fish guy said #1 that this pump was too small for our aquarium and #2 that the filter was not the proper one for our tank.He said if we lose power we are going to have water everywhere. Can someone tell if both of these comments sound correct. I am going to have to go out and buy a completely different filter and if so, which one???Thanks!

I think your Lfs guy is talking about the siphon action , if you have a power outage, your tank will continue to siphon without being pumped back up to the tank! I will ne even pretend to be an expert here, But i belive the is a remedy to this, By drilling a hole at some point in your overflow tube! Others will surly chime in on this, I hope!
You may want to do a search here about sump/fuges and see if you can dig up more info!
as far as the size I would not have a clue, I do not use a sump as of yet! Someday !

Depends on the filter.
Now, how much water does your pump run per hour? (700 seems damb high to me)
If your filter is "Overflow" your not going to get much in the way of flooding.
If your filter is Syphoning, you could get a problem with overflow.
Hes saying, if the pump stops pumping and your filter works by "Pulling" the water from the tank, then you may get some flooding if the bottom of the tube is a distance down in the tank.
If your pump stops running and your using 'Overflow' then you dont have to worry. The pump is feeding the water to the tank which then just 'overflows' down the tube to the sump, where the pump then moves it back up to the tank. With that system, you just have to acomodate the water in the tubes to backflow into the sump.
( If your sump is totaly enclosed with a tight lid. Then you probably dont need to worry about it.)

Well I have no idea the size or look of your wet/dry, however that pump does sound way to under rated for that size tank. At the minimun your will need to have the tank turnover at least 10x per hour, for you thats 1250 gallons per hour, so a pump that does 700gph would be to small unless of course your using two of them. However you also loose head preasure for every vertical foot and 90 degree angle, so now your 700 gph pump is really only doing 500 or less gph. So in building this tank your going to have to ask if you want two pumps or one, internal or external, is there room in the wet/dry for two sumbersible pumps or do I need one strong external one that gets split off or goes to a spraybar.

I also have a wet/dry filter system on my 70 gallon tank. My LFS guy that helped me set up the tank simulated a power outage to show me why I WOULDN'T have 70 gallons of water everywhere. Your two overflows are double walled. water passes through the first wall at several locations that can be seen as slits in various locations. The inner wall is solid, and the water must cascade over the top of this inner wall to enter the very inside where the plumbing will then carry it to the filter system below. Once the water level in the tank drops an inch or two, no more water will cascade over the inner wall, thus cutting off the flow to the sump below.
As far as the size, if it's rated for 150 gals, I think it should be fine for your 125. I don't know anything about the pumps though.
Hope this helps

the water would not come from the overflow it would come from your retrurn line to tank creating a back siphon from the tank into the sump(by drilling a hole just below your normal water line it will break the siphon in a power outage and only return what is in the line(not the tank), dont worry it's an easy DIY fix. as far as pump would go you it all depends on your overflows and how much there draining to the sump.equil in must be equil out with proper head factors accounted for

The LFS guy mean that the sump with that wet/dry filter is just to small, if you turn the pump off there is not enouph room the rest of the water at the top of the tank to drain! The pump is also way under rater you need to go with at least a mag 12 or higher.

If this helps the filter is a Proclear wet/dry 150 with a protein skimmer or as they say a prefilter built in.
