I just did a water change and my filter pads are nasty!!!!!! Is it okay to leave the filter pads out for a couple of days untill I get new ones? I have a 75 gallon with two MJ power heads and about 60-70lbs of LR. Oh yeah this is on a emperor 400.
Thanks

Yeah, though you might want to take one out and leave the other one in, so you don't mess up your biological filtration. The good bacteria has built up on both pads, so if you remove one, leave the other in so the shock on the tank isn't so bad. Then, when you get your filter pads, put the new one in and wait a couple more days to change the other one out. Technically, the filter isn't actually doing much to begin with, but now that it's there, the biological aspect will have some bearing. It won't be bad if you've already done it, and technically you don't really need the filter on there (HOB filters are somewhat worthless, imo), just less stress to the tank this way.

yea, you'll be fine. make sure to keep those clean in the future. you shouldn't let them get all gunked up. wash them out at least once a week.

Cool, thanks, I've already canned them both. I actually turned the filter because without the pads it was making the water not look good from all the crap in the filter. Okay so as you can see I have neglected cleaning the filter because I havenot wanted to wash off anything good. Now I know.
So if a HOB filter is semi pointless what actually does the filtering? Is it just biological that Ishouldbeconcerned with? I do not have a sump or anything if that matters going HOB filterless. Just what is listed above and a redsea prizm skimmer.

If you are using the HOB filter as just Mechanical,, just toss the pads and carbon and replace, assuming you have a sump, LR and LS.. thats your biological filtration right there.. but taking those pads out get yucky and messy.. have patience.. I usually change my pads,, RIGHT BEFORE i do a water change,,, so i can suck out some of the floating CRUD..
