Filter?

What is the best filter media for a filter that you put on the back of your tank? Like a penguin or a marineland bio wheel?

I would vote a skimmer. They hang on the back as well. They cost a lot more then a HOB, but they do a better job taking gunk out of the water.
If you can't afford a skimmer, then a regular biowheel (like penguin - which is what I have and haven't had any problems) would work. Just make sure to get one that is rated ABOVE your tank size, so if you have a 30 gallon, get one that is rated for a 50 gallon - the more filtration the better IMHO.

Emperor rite size filter cartridges they have double thick polyfiber filter pads on one side and the other side has black diamond carbon so you are getting mechanical and chemical filtration IMO are great

I wouldnt say there is a "best" In a HOB filter media, I have an aquaclear I use LR rubble a filter sponge and a bag of carbon. I do believe if you run a protein skimmer you should still have some other type of HOB filter with a sponge to help with the larger particulates to get filtered out. Even ceramic rings can serve as filter media for a HOB filter. I dont like those filter cartridges I think they clog way to fast and they are pretty expensive too, but thats just MO.

I agree... I run two Emperor 400's and a HOB protein skimmer on my 55 gallon reef and it works great. There is plenty of water flow and there is no risk of a bio-overload with my fish (as long as I am reasonable).
I think a refugium is by far the best filtration possible, but as far as HOB goes, Emperor takes the cake in my opinion.

with all due respect I dont think its a question of either or i would suggest you get your mechanical filter up and running first then go for your protein skimmer if you have the funds IMO

Thanks for the replies i do have a protein skimmer its a corallife deluxe my tank is a 125 115 pounds of live rock live sand flowr tank. Been set up for a year was running two skimmers one cracked so was wondering if i should just run a filter instead of another skimmer? My nitrates are going up now i suppose due to the absence of the other skimmer.

i agree about Emperor being the best HOB and for his size tank two is the way to go
