on a 55 gal would an emperor 400 a prizm protein skimmer and an emperor 280 be good for my corals, my tank and hold back nutrients and hair algae?

Imo, if you are going to have a reef mechanical filters can be nitrate factories so if you keep them I would take everything out except the I'd run carbon in them and thats it they will help for flow to. If you want nutrient removal I would set up the biggest sump/fuge you have room for in your stand and upgrade to a higher quality skimmer. The setup you have know won't really do to much nutrient removal except the skimmer will help a little but prizms are really that breat IMO.:D
