Maximus42, a fuge serve's many purposes. Mainly filtration. The overflow skims the top where roughly 70% of the bad stuff is. Once this water enters the fuge it first sees the protein skimmer then the actual refugium. The refugium serves to lower nitrates and phosphates through the dsb, chateo, LR, and xenia. Also it increases the total volume of water from 55g to about 70. This allows for more stability and dissipation of the "bad stuff". Secondly, the fuge is lit opposite of the DT (at night). This serves to maintain pH stability. Thirdly, it is an area for pod production and many other critters in the live sand which is always a good thing. It was very easy to make I just bought a 20g for $20 and siliconed the plexiglass into it.

Here's mine...65 gallon sump/fuge combo in basement filtering a 54 corner reef up stairs...
Not enough room in a "corner" tank stand to run an efficient system, so I went through the floor to the basement and just put a bigger pump on it...:D
About 35 gallons of Macro growing fuge area (algal scrubber) and 20 gallons for the sump, skimmer and return chambers...
The rest of the room is overkill for a power out "backwash" from the tank up stairs
130 watt pc (older 10k bulbs) running 24/7 keeps caulurpa from going sexual
Fluval 404 canister (lower left) running ONLY chemical filtration feeds fuge about 200gph slow flow...
Canister works well and takes the place of "Phosban reactors" and fluidized bed carbon filters
(Side note: I have a similar system on my 210 FOWLR and run a Rena Filstar X3 and that thing beats the 404 on all counts, especially on "re prime" after cleaning)
Euro Reef CS6-2+ is sooo dependable and stable...
Quiet One 4000HH pushes 540 gph "up" to Main tank where another 670 gph flows through a closed loop SCWD run by a Velocity T3
22X turn over on Bare Bottom tank...
Kent float valve in return chamber provides RO top off directly off RO/DI filter...
And my "little blue" jug provides 2 gallon Kalk drip..

Yep...
That shot's about 2 months old....I've got 5 or 6 new pieces...
I'll have to get another "full tank" shot...I've been shooting mostly "singles" lately...:D

I am upgrading my 54 corner from 4X65 pcs to 1X250 Metal halide and 2x65 super actinics, I will post before and after pics after I get my new lights next week

When I first started out I had a small patch in the main tank (standard daylight photoperiod) and it would constantly dump...
Then I moved it to a fuge and played with RDP (reverse daylight photoperiod) It was growing better with 14-18 hrs light but would still dump from time to time and now I had bigger quantities...
Then I went to 24/7 and run 4+ watts/gallon PC...Stuff grows like mad...good for nutrient removal through export...and has NOT gone Sexual since...
24/7 lighting causes it to reproduce "asexual" through "cloning" itself...
Kind of like "Jurrasic Park"..."Spare No Expence"...:D

Not sure about the "pruning" part, but it may be related to the extra growth from the lights that "allows" aggressive pruning...
May be interrelated or may be coincidence... :notsure:

wow you guys have some crazy setups..
i like them.. im trying to design a refugium for my tank.. but dontthink the landlord would appreciate me drilling holes into the flowers... so im going to give my tidepool i used to run a try again.. i had no problems then.. but then i wasnt trying the soft coral route either..
again nice tank
