Filtration Of a Reef Tank

Everyone is great at getting the answer out. I have also learned so much from this site! SWF.com rules! Any ways let me get to my question in a reef tank can you have to much filtration. I am looking to buy a 46 gallon tank. I have an ehiem 2213 that i bought for a 29 that i was going to create. But i am getting a emp 400 with the tank should just use the ehiem or should i use both.. I was going to use both of them please let me know if that is to much....... Or if just the ehiem is enough. thanks Jon:rolleyes:

live rock and a DSB is all you will need in your reef tank 1.5-2 lbs per gallon live rock and 4-5" deep DSB forget the other filters you can ysu then for water circulation if you like but otherwise the may be more problems than they are worth

Since you already have the filters use them for awhile. They help clear out the larger debris and waste. Eventually though it may lead to waste build-up and higher nitrates and ultimately with enough lr and ls you won't need them. After 4 months of buying a ton of lr and ls I emptied my eheim and penguins of all the filters and media and use them primarily for added water movement and volume. Once a month I put carbon in my penguin and run it for a week or so to help clear the water.
I would definitely make sure you have plenty of lr and ls. I have over 68lbs of lr in my 29 gallon and a dsb. THis method has been working great for my tank. I feed heavily so I also run my protein skimmer. Without it I'd lose the tank to algae.
