Filtration question

If I have live rock and a protein skimmer, do I also need a canister filter?
I didn't think so but being a newbie I see some posts that seem to say otherwise. What does everyone think?
Thanks
Rick

What do you consider ALOT? 1lb per gallon, 2lb per gallon?
What would be purpose of buying live rock(instead of base rock) if I still need a canister filter of some sort?
Thanks

1 or 2 lbs. per gallon should be fine. The LR is what has the critters needed to aid in natural filtration, along with the DSB. Base rock would become LR eventually, but only after LR and/or LS seeds it. :D

That's great about the 1 or 2 lbs per gallon for live rock. I was hoping that you weren't going to say something like 4lbs a gallon.
I guess I'am learning something because I was under the impression if you had 1 or 2 lbs per gallonyou would not need a canister filter.
Thanks for the info
Rick
