Filtration! Wet/Dry Protein Skimmers?

LFS said with a reef tank i SHOULD not run a regular filter and should run a wet/drt filter with a protien skimmer.. Game me a cost at 300 for the 2 together.. Again this is a 55 gallon tank.. Do i really need both?
WHY/WHY NOT?

Are you going to use LR? I have a 75 Gal. with 88 lbs. of LR and am only using a skimmer, Remora by AquaC! HTH

It really depends on what type of reef you are going to keep, sometimes all you need/want is a sump. I would definitely advise you to get a skimmer though. If you plan on keeping many fish I would go with the wet dry.

Well i stopped by another LFS on the way home and the guy told me with what i wanted to do i could get away with just a skimmer.
All i want is a couple simple anemoni for the clown fish and for looks... I plan on the tank being mainly fish with only a couple anenomi.
