filtration

i need an opinion on the different filtration options available to use. i have an eclipse 3 with a bio wheel hood and am looking to upgrade. right now i am runninga 29-gallon FOWLR, but would like to size the filtration system for growth / changeover to a reef. due to some house construction, i cannot upsize my tank yet, but i wanted to learn on a more manageable sized system.
what is better - canister filter with protein skimmer hang on? sump system with bio-balls? the bio rocker / sump type? which is more efficient? space is not an issue as there is a closet space behind the tank to keep the filtration equipment.

if you have the room, I would use a sump/fuge combo
if you wanted you could use as large a tank as would fit in there
just my 2cents
