I am going to order my lights today. I am looking at everything available, and was wondering, about the fixture below. I have decided for the time being, to get a cheap fixture, and build a canopy. I will then use the lights on another tank that I have. Will the light below, function for a simple, low light reef? It is a hellolight. Your opinion would be very appreciated!!!!
36" 2x96W Coralife Aqualight CF hood, 1x Actinic and 1x 10,000K, -Square Pin
* Dual 96W bulb unit (192W of Light!).
* 1x 96W Coralife 10,000K and 1x 96W Coralife Actinic Compact
* Acrylic Lens Cover.
* 2 On/Off switches and 2 power cords for separate timers.
* 2 fans built into this unit!
Thank you,
Leopard

it'll work. because you said you're getting it from hellolights i'm sure the actinic is a true actinic 03. i don't know the price but how much is the difference from that and a MH/pc combo? what are you considering for your eventual upgrade? just curious.... if i could do it all over again i would have just bought metal halides, instead of trying all VHO's and all PC's, but it really comes down to what you want in the tank.

I don't have the $$$ for the lights needed for my tank. The mh that is good for my tank was like $550 without tax and shipping. The pc is $188 with tax and shipping. I want to build a canopy and see then I might get mh. I was going to get some t5, but for right now I think I am going to see if I like doing a reef. Then I will start the canopy, and get mh retrofit, and maybe supplment with these.
Thanks for the help...

$550?? wow. what exactly were you looking at? was it a 2 bulb unit or 1? 175's? 250's? 400's? what type of ballast? what brand of bulbs? that seems kinda high....

You can get away with only one MH bulb on your tank, you can either go with one 250 or one 400. Why are you buying a full hood if you're gonna build a canopy. You best bet would be to just get a retro kit to put inside your canopy. If you can do a bit of wiring you can get a MH ballast for about $50 and put it into your own box. I'd skip the PC's and go for a single MH and then add PC's for actinic later if you chose.
