Final Words On BioBalls!!!

I searched and found conflicting results.
1. Are they good for your tank?
2. Are they necessary with refugium?
3. Should I just take them out?
4. Should they ever be rinsed/cleaned?
Please someone finalize this.

everything that i can tell you is oppinion. anyhoo it has been my exp. that you shouldnt clean bio-balls because that would kill the arobic bacteria. you can get rid of them once the tank has been running for a wile (1-2 years) and yes i would use them to start. i hope i helped!!

my opinion is...why take them out if they are already in the tank? They can't do any harm. Only provides extra bio filtration.

Many a reef tank has been succesfull with a wet/dry and bioballs, without high nitrates, they still do water changes and the big secret is:
Do not overfeed.
Do not overfeed.
Do not overfeed.

well, not that i overfeed, but my aggressive fish are messy eaters. it's nearly impossible to clean up after them.

I would suggest leaving them. They work great for messy eatters, however if you want to keep nitrates low add live rock and a deep sand bed for filtration. I think they get such a bad rep for just doing 2/3 the job of the nitregen cycle but they do do that 2/3 of the job very well for agressive setups.
