Finally bought my supplies, any last minute tips for setup?

I just read a post saying floss pre filters should be kept clean because they will add to your nitrates. It was an older thread about a new cycling tank. What does that mean? Should I be doing anything with my filter cartridge while I'm cycling?

1. Just put my shrimp in. How long should I leave it?
2. What does clean the prefilter mean and does it apply to me?
3. When should I start testing for ammonia, etc?
Thanks again everyone-some things I can't find in the books or threads and need more details or reassurance. And this is THE place to get it!:cheer:

The floss prefilters are like your filter cartridge in your whisper power filter. They become nitrate traps when you leave them in there for a long time while you are cycling I do not think they will be a problem. When you have fish and feed them some food get sucked up your filter and just stays on it and your clean up crew cannot get it, thus the build up of nitrates. You could have left the shrimp out since you put your live rock in, I would think a couple of days would be enough though. Test for ammonia every other day and you will notice it will spike and then come back down.

My salinity is looking better - 1.0235 and temp is still 82. I don't know why it isn't going down. Should I change out some water for cooler or just let it go down slowly on its own?
The water is clearer today and I could see that the raw shrimp I put in last night was under a piece of live rock! I wonder if the filter made it scoot up there or if a critter is living in there. The tank is stinky this morning after the crab being in there all night. Maybe I should go ahead and take it out?
There is fine dust on the live rock from the sand settling. should I try to clean it off? If so how? Or would that just stir things up?

I clean the dust off my LR with just my hand. I put my hand in there and wave it like a fan and it blows the dust off, making sure that I don't blow too hard and stir up more substrate. Always make sure your hands and arms are clean when putting them in the tank. You don't want any unrinsed detergents or oils in the tank. There was another thread about a guy who killed his clown fish because he had detergent on his arm and stuck it in his tank.

Here's a question that jumps into the future a bit. Will I need to quarantine my first fish before I put it in? If so should I be cycling a QT tank too? Or how does this go. Hmmmm

Yes, set up your QT. If the treatment for some potential illness requires funky chemicals you won't want to put that in your display tank with your LR and LS.
Just my opinion.
