Finally GFCI

LOol...NO....We never did it....BUT we are now
last night I thought I smelled something burning....hmmm....THEN thought it was just my imagination
SMELLED it again this morning, and traced the smell to behind the 225G.....The electrician put 4 outlets in behind the tank..ON THE FLOOR...NO GFCI
we already have been thru this on here....lol
SOOOOO right now Danny is disconnecting the 4.....and we are going to hook up 2 GFCI....(all we have here).....I only use 2 outlets anyhow, and once we hook up the new LEDS, we probably only need one...
Poor Danny....Look how he has to work :(

The leds probably don't need a gfci since they aren't going in the tank. But an afci might offer some protection, they are designed to trip if they sense any shorts. GFCI is to protect you from shock.

Yeah, since he is under there he might go ahead and replace the other 2 anyway....they are all being mounted on the walls too.....LOL
the other 2 will be standard outlets though

Ask SSCInet if there is anything else you can do to prevent electrical shocks. I'm pretty sure he recommended going with a GFCI outlet AND an AFCI Circuit breaker. That'll give you two layers of protection. If I were you, I'de go ahead and do all four outlets, especially with all that water above it! I know a titanium grounding probe in the tank and sump would also tremendously help, and you would never have any stray voltage in the tank at all... I know when I can, I'm going to be installing one on my system.

I have a grounding probe in the 225G already....
OK....so we replaced 2 outlets with GFCI and got them off the floor.....The other 2 are still on floor right now.....1 is turned off, and the other is covered for now...UNTIL we get another GFCI.
It is extremely hard to reach the other 2, and my plugs are running off the 2 GFCI's that we changed....so we should be G2G

So what was burning?????
NO CLUE......May have been salt getting in an outlet

not on the floor no more....LOL....
WE ARE kinda mad though....The electrician was supposed to make all the tank outlets separate, and we just found out the 4th outlet behind the tank is tied together with the outlet across the room that runs the 54G
NO BIG DEAL really.....we just have that outlet covered unti lwe can get another gfci....and figure out how to reach it to move it on the wall....LOL

Good job- it is a great safety precaution to take. Hopefully the thing that was burning was just salt.. nothing more serious.

My guess would be that there was some arcing going on...a bad contact somewhere. Hopefully you guys find it before it comes an issue. I'd check the receptacles that you pulled out for any smell of burning or signs of charring. Also check the ends of the cords on all your plug in's for the same thing.
Depending on where that 4th outlet ties into the existing circuit that your 54g is on, you might just be able to replace the outlet that the 54g is on if it is easier to get to and then the 4th one behind the 225g would automatically be protected. But that's only if it is down stream of the 54g outlet.

Well we replaced 2 outlets, and one is shut down, one is covered (and not in use)..so I feel pretty confident we are not in any danger anymore
Remember a while back I had that heater burn one fo the outlets.....That one was one we just replaced, BUT IT was disconnected all this time. None of the other outlets looked suspicious either

Cool, just to make sure I'd check any power strips that you might be using as well. Personally I wouldn't be able to sleep very well until I figured out what it was.
