finally caught him out more than just his head, what do you guys think, i still don't have a positive id on him either. i saw a picture at lfs of a gymnothorax javanicus( giant moray) and it was pretty close.

Does he have a greenish face w/blue eyes?
I really doubt it's a giant moray. If it is, you're in trouble!

no blue eyes but he's around 30-32" and really isn't growing that fast right now.
if you look closely at the pic just to the left and forward from him there's a piece of shrimp on the sand. i have fed him shrimp, scallops and krill pretty much for the most part but he really loves the shrimp the best.
he's in a 135 with a 13 inch lion and thats it.
here's a shot of the lion

OK, I looked up your eel. It looks like an undulatus, not a javanicus.
From my book: "Eel is active at night and feeds on fish, octopus and crustaceans". "a 30" specimen can eat up to 25 medium feeder fish during a single feeding." 4'9" max size...considered "aggressive and prone to bite other eels". Also, "known to be aggressive toward the aquariast...beware hands inside the tank".
Also known as the Yellowheaded Moray.
Have fun with that bad boy!

thanks for the info polar, so far he has really shown no aggression towards anything, i can put my hand in and he will take large pieces of shrimp from me. i don't do it very often and i'm extremely carefull because of him and the lion in there. thanks again

I agree with Polar too, but then we are looking at the same pic out of the same book heheh. But Undulated is the best match I can come up with, same yellow head and patches. Gets to be almost 5 feet in length.

Sebae et. al:
The book I use to I.D. eels is "Reef Fishes, Vol. 1" by Scott Michael. It's the best one I've found so far for eel variety and info.
Harlequin, do you concur?:)
