Finding Nemo in the Pet Store

I really find it shocking that 21 people have voted that the movie was NEGATIVE for the hobby. Thats seems a little ridiculous to me. For whatever reason, people may find people calling them nemo and dori a little annoying but NEGATIVE for the hobby??? How is it negative? because people are uneducated and buy fish that eventually die from improper setups or conditions? Half the people on this board and i'd guess alot of people annoyed about "dori" and "nemo" do the same thing and put tangs in small tanks, anemones with bad lights, etc... Movie or no movie, alot of people will do what they want and make bad decisions with their fish or tanks.
The movie put the industry in the spotlight and made it mainstream. Because of the movie we have many more lfs and online stores to buy from and they carry better selections now. This seems a little like the "comic book store mentality". When i used to collect comics, you'd go in a store and they would treat you like crap. It was like they wanted the hobby all to themselves and didn't want others in their "little world" even though it made them monety and expanded their hobby. Never could figure it out but anyone who collects comics knows that the store owner from the Simpsons is dead on. I've definitely gotten similar vibes in lfs from some.

I guess what you don't realize is that all of these "children" are just that. They were introduced to the "Nemo" and "Dory" in the movie. I'm not certain, but I would be willing to bet because of the ages of these children they have no earthly idea of what a Clown fish or a Blue Hippo Tang fish is...let the kids be kids If it bugs you don't listen.

oh how i dislike that movie...AT first it was a fun movie but then, then i got a job at a ***** (that does give out care sheets on saltwater fish for free, fresh water fish too!). There isn't a day that goes by where some one goes "Look mommy its nemo" or "come over here honey and look at the nemo's) omg its the worst thing ever. But i have some bad stories of stupid adults who wanted a nemo tank or a clown fish or a yellow tang.
I had a lady come in and ask me if she could put blue damsels in little bowls to put on tables at a wedding (i told her only bettas could be used for that)
I Full grown man asked me if clown fish would get along with his gold fish.
Another man was gonna buy one of those 2.5 starter kits, then when he asked me to bag up a yellow tang he put it back after i told him no.
The worst by far would be the people who dont speak very good english and point to the fish they have (usually gold fish or guppies) then point to a clown fish and go "can go with nemo???) or the parents who come in with their kids to start up a fish tank as a first pet. "ok this is our first tank and some of the fish he/she likes" (points to tetras, barbs, cichlids, ect...) "and the nemo fish, can all those go together???"
Its really upsetting to me cause we have a sign that says saltwater fish over our salties!!!
and about the first post, petsmart doesnt sell saltwater fish yet. (or rabbits, ferrets, guini pigs, and large snakes)

I am not trying to flame you Rara, however, have you ever read the ***** care sheets? Just so you know for future reference, they are nothing I would vouch for if I was a ***** employee. The ***** care sheets are recommending all of the saltwater fish be kept in a tank of or around 30 gallons. They also say that for every inch of fish, you should leave 2 or more gallons of water. What that means to a customer is that a 2 inch tang is perfectly fine in their 30 gallon tank. Also, it lists the ideal salinity for starfish at 1.020 to 1.026. Do you know how many "pretty" blue linkia starfish get sold to people with 55 gallon tanks with a salinity of 1.021?
***** is just as much a part of that problem as the customers' ignorance is. There are some very good *****'s out there, but the gross majority are terrible.
However, that was not the original topic, so I will not go on a rant about that.

Okay, I'm gonna admit it..Finding Nemo is my FAVORITE animated movie (Mulan a close second). My 11 year old daughter is irritated by this and doesn't want me to buy the movie. I like the fish relationships.
When her friends are over they do wonder if my tomato clown is a nemo (I do tell them the correct names) and my yellowtail damsel is a dory. Bothers me not a whit. I also hear it in LFS (who can avoid it) but
.
I think most parents probably do realize that the animated tank is supposed to be saltwater and, as is the theme of another thread, alot of folks are put off by the difficulty that they hear about keeping a salt tank. Cost prohibitive, also, even to give their little darlings a nemo.
I don't think of the movie as a positive or negative to the hobby.

I can just about tell from the posts who has kids and who dont.
I tried to just have my 2 year old say hippo tang, not that i was trying to correct em just thought it would be cool to hear him say hippo tang and he got mad at me and started screaming dory, dory, dory daddy.
Those who dont have kids will understand some day when they do.

I don't have kids (18) but I love children, from a big family, & have a niece & nephew. It don't bother me one bit when a kid calls a fish a Nemo or Dory. I take my niece & little sister to the petstore & they say look at Nemo. That is what they know them by. Also that is what most people know them by since the movie "Finding Nemo". Yes they're a clown fish, but unless if you have one as a pet does it matter it's real name? I'm setting my first saltwater tank up now & my sister, niece, & girlfriend ask if I'm getting a Nemo. Which I'm getting a tomato clown so I guess some what if they want it to be.
As far as the movie goes impacting the hobby in a positive or negative way, well it's hard to exactly say. Hey I bet you a lot of people bought their selves a tank & started a saltwater aquarium with a so called "nemo" fish. Ok well a lot of them probally did the research & had/have a sucesfull well maintained salt water aquarium. Then again there is probaly a lot of people that did/do not take proper care of their SW tank or let their 8 year old to tend completely to it. So overall it probally affected this hobby in a good way. Regardless of movies there is always going to be people that don't take care of their tanks, but probally thanls to this movie there is a lot of people that are really into this hobby now.
In the long run I think the pet stores are the ones to blame. They should at least try to properly educate people who are buying an aquarium and/or fish. I'm not going to say someone is a bad person because they bought a fish & don't take care of it properly because they didn't know how to. Yes people should research before buying any pet, but they aren't bad people in life who don't. You know the pet stores should just do more. They could do something like have a touch screen computer that customers can look at all kinds of different fish & all kinds of info about them. Come on PetsMart & ***** have plenty of money to do so. They should give out a free pamplet on the basics of starting a marine or freshwater aquarium, with every purchase of a tank. Though still offer them to everyone.
Now here's what I started laughing about in PetsMart a while back. A woman was pushing here child in a buggy past the fish isle. The child says "Look mommy, there's Nemo", which the PetsMart here don't even sell saltwater fish. I think he was pointing to an ornage platy. The mother replies with "Son, that ain't a Nemo. Nemp's a gold fish.

I find it funny that grown adults are up in a tizzy about "Nemo"........I can understand your frustration if an adult is walking around the store with wife or such saying that, but little kids.....Get a grip......Obviously it has their attention and they are intrigued with fish, they will learn in time.......Like stated before the first time we walked in the pet store for saltwater what honestly did we know?????

First things first, yes ***** care sheets suck but atleast we try to inform people. Before any of our fish are sold we are told to ask what they are going into and if the fish they picked wont work we try to find a better choice.
And on normal conditions ***** isn't supposed to carry blue linkia stars, It isnt in our books, the only stars that are in our books are serpent, chochlate chip, and sand sifting. But sand sifting stars, as i understand, dont do well in any tank.
