Finger leather getting sick?

I have noticed the last few days that the base of my finger leather is peeling. It is a fragged piece about 4 inches tall and 1 1/2 inches around at the base that was attached to a small piece of live rock and has been in the tank for about 2 1/2 months. The polyps are still opening and look good but about 20% of the base has just started to peel. Is this a bad thing? All water parameters are good and everything else in the tank is happy.

Is it just the outer layer peeling or does it look stringy?

It's just the outer layer as far as I can tell. It's not peeling very fast and has only peeled a few millimeters of skin about 1/3 of an inch around, but it is advancing, so I'm a little worried.

It just sounds like growth from the description, but a picture, if possible, would help. If it looks like it's 'flaking' (sort of like sunburn peeling off), it is probably just growing. My sheds its base in the same manner that it sheds its crown. It just seems to take a lot longer for the base to come off.

Thanks frankl15207. I am hoping that's what it is. It looks like the skin is peeling off like you said. I'd post a pic but my digital camera is not working (damn technology)
