Ive got a couple of these tanks still in the boxes. I was going to use them as gifts to family members, however now I find myself tempted to open one and set it up. I can always buy another right?

My ideas were fairly simple considering the tank itself and the HOB canister it comes with. I was opting to remove the filter media and the filter top, retrofit a small light above the canister filter and grow cheato inside to function as a small refugium. Possibly running some activated carbon or a small bag of chemi-pure beneath the cheato if possible.
Im not sure of the room in the filter and if its not do-able then I will not attempt it. The main lighting which comes with the setup seems OK, the only issue I have is putting soft coral in such a small body of water. As many of you know they are bad about releasing small quantites of toxin when crowded and in that small of a water volume it will be hard to keep water parameters steady. Possibly very small frags and watching water quality diligently would help to keep this down. On such a small tank, considering im going to be using a small fuge, would you opt to use a protein skimmer? I always have used them on any and all tanks, however real estate in this tank is going to be very small.
Heater of course
A hydor koralia nano would probably suffice for water movement. Of course your standard live rock and sand bed (probably going to go deep on the bed; at least 5 inches.) As far as livestock is concerned, I haven't even considered this. I doubt I would be adding even a single fish, but possibly a very small goby.
The main things which turn me off to this tank, are the obvious facts that the top is completely open, and I would have to have an acrylic top cut to fit, and even then if I opted to add a skimmer there would be large openings in the acrylic to allow for all the of hanging equipment. The open top also will definitely increase the evaporation, causing top offs to be needed relatively often, of course water changes will be something that will be needed frequently anyway.
Having typed all of that, Im starting to sway against the idea of using this as a pico reef. I suppose I have sort of convinced myself against it. I will say finnex does make good products in that I use their LED heaters in my tanks and they are really nice. The temperature probe gives you a direct readout in LED numbers what your temp in that section of the tank is. I use multiple heaters in all of my tanks so these I use as a secondary source usually in my sumps or fuge so I can easily check the temps in that specifc area of the tank.
Give me your opinions or ideas? Im well aware of the difficulty of smaller volumes of saltwater, and am fairly confident in my ability, my concerns lie in the equipment and the soudness of my design. Any ideas and tips would greatly be appreciated and defintely will be incorporated if I do indeed decide to setup one of these tanks.

Looks like a perfect little refugium, you just need to find a way to attach it to the main tank.. Light and all. I am a firm believer in open tanks and lots of top offs..but that's just me being me.

Yes I agree completely with you flower. The more evaporation the more water you have the chance to introduce back into the tank to rejuvenate used up minerals. Also I agree in that water changes are important no matter how large the tank, however the smaller the tank the more unforgiving it is, even of a day late water change.
In all truthfulness nova it wouldn't surprise me lol. These will be the first tanks I have purchased for family members so Ill see how it goes. I didn't get one for my dad as he would probably look at it and laugh. He still firmly believes in the undergravel filtration method and says biowheels are the devil so I won't get into that. Thank god he doesn't know how to use a computer that well or he would probably plague your site with his off the wall ideas and inventions. I can say the stands he has made me are very nice. Ill have to take some pictures and post them. The room inside is a little cramped but he doubly reinforced them so that gives me much more peace of mind. His hobbies are guns and fish lol, so its to be expected that he's a little crazy to begin with. They appear to be really nice little tanks though. Im still pondering over wether to open one up
. Im sure ill give in here in a bit and ill post some pics later. Off work this weekend anyways so itll give me something to do.

I don't see anything wrong with his hobbies at all. And I'm fairly certain there are a few Rayls living in Oklahoma right now. A good chunk of our family runs a few popcorn farms in Indiana, but I know a couple went southwest from there as well. (I have a big bloody family, can't keep 'em all straight.) A few of us REAL weirdos moved all the way down to Florida and started a new breed of Rayls down here. ;-)
Your dad's building skills definitely sound like something my family would do. "If it's not over-engineered, it's under-engineered." My dad built a doghouse that - my hand to g*d - was probably more up to hurricane code than our house was. We used to joke that when a category 3 or more came through, we were all going to cram in the doghouse to ride it out. You should let your dad on here one time so we can meet him.

I still live in weatherford. =). Originally from the southeast part of the state. To be specifc I grew up and graduated from Stigler. (Its roughly 40 miles south of Muskogee). I work here in Weatherford at walgreens atm. Still looking around, (wife doesn't like it much out here and I can't say I blame her). Looking to move at least to the city or possibly Tulsa up towards my sister. Thats crazy you're from OK, what are the odds? About as far away from the ocean as you can get hugh?
Happen to know any good local stores around the city? Ive been in the Reef warehouse and wasn't overly impressed. Also been into the store at Yukon and don't particularly care for it either. I hear the one in Norman is pretty nice and the one in Edmond wasn't too bad. Ive ordered alot of my livestock and coral from here and probably will continue to do so.

I say go w/ it.
I have a 3g pico and it's awesome, small powerhead, and HOB filter.
I do top offs twice a day, in the morning when I wake up and at night before I go to bed.
Everything is happy, I have acros, montis, acans, and zoos.
All are doing well, as far as water changes are concerned,
I do 2 cups every Saturday.
I have 1 cleaner shrimp, and I am getting 2 small clown gobys.
