Foam is a supression as is also to smother the flame. Also its used in reflecting heat away from other structures. Most AFFF is animal protein and yes you can bet the second it hits heat it smells. I yet to have see the consumer size of foam.

Yes, indeed, it does come with instructions. It instructs the user to deflect it off of a vertical surface to gently disperse over the flaming liquid. It also includes a warning basically saying: don't spray this directly as the liquid, or else you'll just get the hot flaming liquid everywhere!
With regards to the contents of the foams, it seems they're are a plethera of kinds, as are the dry chemical. The dry chemical is useful, as instead of removing 1 or more of the 3 'sides' of the fire triangle, it breaks the continuous chemical chain reaction that allows it to exist as a fire. So that's great; There are lots of good extinguishers;
Looks like the bottom line is: Just have one to keep your house from burning down... :)

If you want a good selection of extingishers, go to a boaters supply store. No where is fire as great a danger as on a boat, no where to go!! They offer any type you like incuding a very nice foam unit

I don't think that SWF offers these so I hope the link is ok!!! LOL
Personally I use a CO2 extinguisher, keep it by the tank, they will be your safest bet for the tank inhabitants if you have a fire. The downsides to CO2 are the cylinder is heavy, not very easy to comeby and may be slightly more difficult to use if you have never used one.
My advice, if you have never used any fire extinguisher is go to your local Fire Department, most offer a class or demo in which you will have the opportunity to put out a small fire with one of the various types...WELL worth doing...a good learning experience so when the emergency comes you know what to do and expect!!

By the way Tube,
That looks worse than you described, hope we were able to help in some way! Insurance going to cover it? If so you will have quite the awesome tank when you are done!! Also, find a good electrician to check out those lights, some may be salvageable...just a thought.
Glad to hear everything is doing as well as can be..Stay in touch..

Hope this all reminds you to check you smoke detectors and as added safety, maybe buy 1 and put is near the tank, you could use velcro to attach it behind the tank on the wall or in your cabinets.
