Wow... do yall up north never have buildings hit by lightning? If we used ANYTHING without a surge protector it would be gone in about 6 months....

I don't think I've ever been in a building that has been hit by lightning. Occasionally a tree will be hit but it doesn't happen too often.
I appreciate the opinions. I talked with another science teacher today and the VP. They seemed to think surge protectors were ok. The VP was going to check with the building manager. I don't want to be sneaky about it. Most people know fish tanks have lights so it would look odd without them. I also don't want to endanger anyone by having the wrong equipment. Three of us have tanks. Two are freshwater and mine is saltwater. We all have some kind of power strip. If mine is a problem, so are the others.
