Firefish Flashing

Iowa Clown

Hello. I recently moved across the country, which meant I had to take down my aquarium, get rid of my fish, and then start over. I set up my 37 gallon aquarium approximately seven weeks ago, and I let it cycle for five weeks. It tested the water throughout the time to make sure that it was actually cycling. I added my first fish two weeks ago. They are two clownfish and a firefish. I had all of these species before I moved, so I am familiar with them. They have been doing great, and during the past two weeks I've been doing a 25% water change every 3-4 days and checking the parameters.

Today, though, I noticed my firefish flashing a few times and swimming a little bit "jerky"--something I've never seen this firefish or my previous one do--and I immediately looked for any signs of ich. I cannot see any on the firefish or on my clownfish. I also thought the firefish's gills looked more red than usual.

I also have not seen the clownfish bothering the firefish. I tested the water, and the parameters were as follows: Ph 8.0, Nitrites 0, Ammonia between 0 and .25, and Nitrates between 10 and 20 (sorry I can't be more specific on the ammonia and nitrates--I have difficulty distinguishing the minute color variations). I immediately put some Ammo-lock in the tank and did a 25% water change.

Any ideas about what could be causing this? Is it a latent case of ich? Ammonia poisoning? This seems awfully low for it to be ammonia, though I don't know. I would appreciate any insights you might have. Thanks.

Let assume your water parameters are all in line. Could be he is just trying to dislodge food from the rock work. Now the bad things. Gill flukes or bacterial infection can cause red gills. I would treat with PraziPro if the condition continues. Beth might want to step in
