Firefish Goby Question

Is it safe to keep a firefish goby, (red or purple) with a coral banded shrimp? Also, do they do better in pairs than singularly? This would be our first fish.
Thanks,
Bruce

They do better in pairs, but I have had a single for a while (His pair didn't make it), and he has been doing well. He is always out, but has a bolt hole that he hangs out in.
CBS I've heard are fish killers. Granted, I haven't had one, just reading some of the posts out there. I would take this with a grain of salt, maybe someone who has one can give a better answer.

I have had a firefish with both a maroon and a CBS for about a week now with no problems. The others were actually established which would seemingly make it worse, but other than one or two brief nipping occasions at feeding time, I've never seen anything wrong with the environment.
What I think may have helped is that the firefish is slightly larger (for now) than the maroon.

Thanks for the info. Well we ended getting 1 firefish goby. They didn't have any pairs. I drip acclimated him for 2 times the water volume then put him into the tank. He went right to the bottom and is hiding out in some rock. Is this normal? How long do you think he will hang in there? This is our first fish, so we really don't know if this behavior is normal or not. I assume he is scared or stressed.
Thanks Again,
Bruce

So you can put a purple and fire together and they will get along? I thought they had to be pairs of the same species.
Thanks,

Well your not supposed to but i have a 6 foot long tank and they stayed apart for the first couple months, but then one day they were hanging together, and now there always together. So i would say i was a lucky one. But my tank was big enough for them not to feel threatened ( i think ) And there just great to watch. Trust me everyone thought the same thing. But im kinda lucky that way  When it comes to breakin the rules i always seem to come out on top!! Just wish i could do that with Money!!

Goodluck to ya! Todd

It took my firefish about 4 months to stop hiding when I had one. This is normal. Your CB shrimp may or may not bother your firefish. It is a crap shoot. I had a CB shrimp with a couple chocolate chip starfish and a damsel for about 6 mnths. Then it started taking out my fish and starfish. Not sure why, but the first six months weren't a problem.

Thanks for the info folks. The Dart fish only hid in the rocks for a couple of hours before venturing out. He stays out most of the time too, eating pods in the water column. He is not bothered by the cbs either and he will get pretty close to him. I think one of the keys here is to keep everyone well fed.
