They are fine in groups when they are young but once they mature a dominant pair will form and harass the others. I would not get all of them.

I just bought a firefish, when I seen them in the lfs there was 2 of them. One was definatley the dominant one and the other was hiding most of the time. So I don't know if 2 would work either but your tank is a nice size so you could certainly give it a try.
They are beautiful I am so glad I added one to my tank.

Hi, I am from the sunny okangan Valley in B.C. not Vancouver but if you know where Kelowna B.C. is then I am 30 min north of that.
Good price on the 4 of those firefish, I just paid 20.00 for one. I have a nano 10 gal so one is my limit of them but they are sure striking in groups.
I see some say to get 2 some say 4 I guess you have to go with what you think will work best for you.
I would stay with the two in your size of tank and with the mixture of other non aggressive fish they should do just fine.
Make sure you have a tight fitting lid on your tank as they like to jump and will jump out....

I will add my two cents.....I bought two, seemed great at the store, then they were good in the tank for about 2 months. They must have been the same gender, because out of the blue one started to pick on the other non stop, I ended up with one. Your choice, but I had a bad experience with two. Lots of live rock and many caves, but the one found it no matter where it went.

Oh!!! How do you tell male from female??? In the store 3 of them have long dorsal fins and 1 has a short would that be a female????

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a true definition of male, female. At least not that I have heard of. They are usually good until full grown, then if they are the same gender do you somewhat know. Males will fight where females are more tolerate of other females.

What other kinds of fish do you have in your tank besides the dottyback??
This is my first expeience with a firefish, when I bought this one the other one at the lfs had a smaller dorsal fin and it was definatley not the ruler of the tank, a bit smaller and the tail a bit tattered too. I picked the better looking one of course .
Maybe just get the one then, they are beautiful fish and see how that goes. Mine is quite happy with the perc clown and the yellow watchman goby, no aggression at all in the tank.
"Sometimes it is better to be safe than sorry". As for the dottyback I cannot comment about them, never had one but know they can be quite mean.
Others may be able to comment about them for you.

I have a 3" clarki clown(she's the queen of the tank) and 3 damsel they never attack anything.
I would like to get rid of 2 of them they are just taking up room its only a 48gal.
The dottyback has been in the tank for 3 months and is getting more and more brave.
