Firefish

I really love my fire fish, wanted to get another. Most of what I'm reading says they like a mate. Then I got another who said if one has already established itself it the tank, they may fight if I add a new one. Anyone have any experience, info. or opinions? Thanks so much.

Hi,
They may give a little chase for territory before settling down, but I think adding another will be just fine. They are timid little fish...but they are jumpers. If they are chasing each other they may go carpet surfing, do you have your tank covered?
P.S.
By cover, I mean with mesh or egg crate...never put an actual top on a SW tank.

You are great! What a cool fish, I'll do a little research and see what I can come up with. How are you? Wendy

Hi,
Thanks for asking...I'm doing well.
I posted on another thread (of yours I think) ...get those books, they are the most helpful books I ever had, and I recommend them to everyone keeping a SW tank, and needs advice on how to stock it. I copied the fire fish pics from the Marine book.

@Flower, just noticed you said about not covering tank, my last tank was covered by a 3mm sheet of acrylic cut to fit, never had any problems with this. Can you explain why covering is not a good idea please?

A tight fitting cover will hinder gas exchange. SW has less oxygen then freshwater. A plastic top or glass top also acts like a magnifier of the light...heating up the tank...I think of it as a green house affect.
Nylon mesh with an elastic band sewed on the edges will make a good safety net to prevent jumpers, and allow the light to shine through. That way you don't hinder gas exchange. Lots of people use egg crate but fire fish are very good at getting past it, and go carpet surfing anyway. Fire fish and fairy wrasses are prone to committing sushi.

The other book is on inverts, such as crabs, feather dusters, snails and shrimp to name a few. It's set up about the same as the marine fish book explaining the tank size, if more then one can be in the same tank, food needs, warnings of possible trouble they can cause, and proper care. It's really helpful. Knowing what snail eats what algae and that camelback shrimp looks very similar, and often mistaken for peppermint shrimp. One eats aptasia while the other doesn't.
We keep those critters as a CUC (clean up crew) and knowing what each one does, goes a long way to keep our tanks in tip top shape.
