Started my tank with Tap haven't used it in 8+ months though. Still have algae problems, etc. hard to say what causes it in my tank, but im constantly fighting different algaes. Red Slime being the latest after a rock slide.
That's simply because you do not have enough nutrient consumers to keep up with the nutrients being generated. And those nutrients come overwheliming from the bioload not the input water. Hence the ro/di does very little to reduce the algae nutrients.
Red slime is very common after a tank has ran for several month. What may be happening is nitrates have dropped very low and cyano can get its nitrogen from nitrogen gas vrs nitrates. So the cyano blooms.
One way to fight that is to kill the lights for a few days to kill off the slime. As the cyano dies off it also return nitrates to feed algae in the system. Then adjust lighting so the cyano stays away and the other algaes can thrive. Corraline is an algae also.
