Well I'v tested for the ammonia a few times but if it cycled I missed it. I noticed a bit of a diatom outbreak and green hair alge so I might go get a CUC Saturday. It will be awsome to have more than a few feather dusters to watch. Anyone have an opinion on a deep or shallow sandbed?

It's only been a few days...you didn't miss the spikes. Hold of on the CUC..way too soon for them. Cycling can take 4-6 weeks.

What is that black bulbous looking thing in the upper left of your picture?? I've seen them in other people's pictures and I assumed it was part of the filter but then I saw your AquaClear hanging off the back.
I know this is prob a dumb question for ya'll lol, but what is it and what is it for lol??

The only dumb question is the one you don't ask. And the answer to your question is the black orb thing is a powerhead it just pushes the water around. This one is called a koralia 1 made by hydor, and the other popular ones are maxijets.
