First Saltwater Tank

I just bought an Eclipse 12 and I'm ready to start up the tank. First should I use Live Sand or Crushed Coral since its a fish only tank. Another question is what is a good way to cycle the tank?

What kind of fish are you going to put in there? To cycle the tank, put the substrate in, powerheads, and water. Then drop in a little dead shrimp like the kind we eat, unseasoned. Then you can either take it out after a week or leave it in there. That would cycle it.

Please do not put a clownfish in an uncycled tank. It is very uncomfortable for the fish to go through the cycle.
Do a search on this forum. Keyword: cycle

The best way to cycle your tank is by using some raw uncooked shrimp to get the cycle started. After a few weeks all of the beneficial bacteria will form and convert the ammonia and nitirites to nitrates that can be controlled via small water changes.
You could also put a piece of live rock in there to get the cycle going.
And as stated above go with the sand. Crushed coral gets nasty after a while.:)

Not really, I used it on my tank.
