Anyone know the general rule of thumb for when to do the first water change ? .. I've had my tank for about 2 months now. It cycled after 3 weeks. I have only done freshwater top offs up to this point and figured it is gonna be time soon.
thanks,
Dan

If your tank is done cycling you can do a water change any time you want. I even did small water changes during the cycle to lower the stress on the fish.

what kind of a load do you have on the tank? that will make all the difference in the tank. if you dont have that much my think since you just cycled it. maybe a few fish. then i would wait till about 2and half month mark. but if you have a big load in there i would do it right away. just my 2 cents hope i could help.

I don't have a whole lot in there now.. A couple of damsels.. some snails, hermits, 2 brittles. It's a 90 Gallon tank. I am topping off now with RO/DI.. I got the maxxima HiS. Just measured nitrates at 10 everything else was 0. I lost a couple of crabs which might have caused the nitrates to grow ( was 5 last week). One is buried too.. no way to get it out without dismantling the tank.
