What exactly do you mean by "fish to start off with"?
If you mean you need something to cycle your tank with, then you don't need fish at all. You can use a raw shrimp.
If you mean you're looking for something to start with after your cycle is finished, then I recommend something tank-raised or aquacultured like clowns.
:)
I've never had a royal gramma..can't help ya there!

Some fish I would recomend for a starter tank would be damsels, but since you don't want damsels, then we shall look at our options. A cousin of the damsel, the chromis is a hardy fish that not aggressive and if also pretty. You could also got with a type of goby, like a neon or a clown. Another popular fish that is fairly easy would be the clownfish, like a percula clown. If you want a royal gramma, they are pretty hardy but just let your tank run with another fish in there first for awhile before putting the royal in there.

Royal grammas are awesome. I have one and i love it. I also have 2 percs and they are cool too. They will even come up and eat out of your hand.

I really like my diadema dottyback. It has great color, loves to explore the rockwork, and stays small but can defend itself. My diadema scrapped with my tomato clown for a while, but now they seemed to have settled their differences.

Do you have a fish wish list? That would be the best thing to do since you just getting started. Pick you five or so fish that you like and research them to check on compabilty and needs of each fish. Then get the most docile of the bunch and add it first. Don't be affraid to ask questions here.
I know I didn't answer your question because you need a plan first. Never impulse buy, this will cost you fish and money. You came to the right place for answers to get you started
Take your time and choose wisely. More on your tank and setup would be helpful.
