fish load

I've heard differing numbers for the amount of fish you can have in a tank. I know each species must be considered for compatibility and swimming space needs, but what is a good rule of thumb for # of inches of fish per gallon.
I'm considering just doing a bunch of damsels for a long while, to get the tank superstable, and keep it easy to manage. Since damsels are heartier, can you increase the number versus the general rule of thumb?
Note my tank size in my profile.

OK, my profile didn't show. I have a 125 gal. fish only tank with a skimmer, wet dry, and a UV sterilizer.
