fish odor :P

Hello,
recently with the stress and homework of being an eighth grader i had to empty out both of my fish tanks. At first it had the regular kind of musty fish smell. From about 4 months ago my room (wich is faily small) still has a verry strong fish odor. To try and get rid of the smell i have done all kinds of things like shampooing the carpet, washing the walls and even replaced all the bedding. One of my friends has reccomended i get a dehumifier to try and pull any salt water out of the walls and floor. I would just like to get some more opinions.
Thankyou :)

I have 3 sw and 2 fw tanks and I have no odor at all. If I put my nose directly over the tank it smells kinda like the ocean, but I have to almost have my nose in the water. Did you ever have a tank leak out or a fish jump out of the tank and die? That's all I can think of.

LOL ... I've had over 20 tanks in my apartment (500sq ft) and never had a fishy smell other than when I'm defrosting food.
Did you spill a lot of water when you had these tanks? Are the tanks still empty in the room?

When I used to break down my freshwater tanks my daughter in law who was pregnant at the time couldn't stand the "fishy" smell, I hardly noticed any odor at all.
LOL...I'm looking at an ad here on the site..... SCOE 10X to remove the toughest odors...it works or it's free

Now that I've re-read the OP, if he didn't wash out the tanks after draining them and they are sitting in his room with all that residue left in them, that could be the source of the smell. When I put a tank out in storage 4 years ago, I didn't rinse it and the sand on the bottom of the tank still had a smell after a couple years.

reread the original post and it doesn't sound like the tanks are still in the room, The young person is talking about the room not the tanks.

All he said is he emptied out his tanks. Since the OP has left the building, I guess we may never know.
I'm afraid it would take a true idiot to wash the walls and carpet to get rid of a fishy smell and when that doesn't work wash the curtains and bed linens...then get on a fish forum and ask what to do, all while an empty uncleaned tank sits right in front of them....in a really small room

Hello,
Thanks for all the imput everyone ! first off my floor has carpet also i have washed the tank out verrry good with a vinager water solution. There were not any mayjor spills or anything like that i can think of. also my tank had some what of a crash were suddenly things were dying and there were strange kinds of algee everywhere also I found out my filter stopped working properly. I had never had a fish smell in my room until then. also i was having over a entire ice cream bucket of water evaporating out of my tank every month and my door is normally closed so where would that water be going ?
I dont smell it as bad as my family does but according to them it smells pretty bad and they really want me to get rid of the smell !! So im not sure if i should even try something like a dehumidifier ?
thanks:)
p.s. Haha meowzer trust me i have tried frebreez !
and yes itt is me :), im not an imposter hahaha

You misunderstand my comment of a real idiot. I was saying to Mantisman51 that I didn't think sharkbait had an empty unclean tank in his room. I'm pretty sure the tank was the first thing removed and then he cleaned his carpet and washed the walls..there was still an odor so he wahed the bed linens and curtains. I was not saying sharkbait was an idiot....I give the young person more credit than that.
Now if it turns out sharkbait did have an empty uncleaned tank I would be shocked.

Try sprinkling baking soda on the carpet and let it set for an hour and vacuum it up. Then, place open containers of baking soda throughout the room. Baking soda helps to absorb smells. Works in the fridge, kitty litter, & puppy pads, so why wouldn't it work in a fishy bedroom?
