A friend of ours, that knows we are into our fish tanks big time sent us an email with a link to an articlle posted in the NY times website. See the link below.
Fish Tank Can Be a Haven for Salmonella
What are your thoughts? I don't buy it, unless people are eating their pet fish. Duh.
It sounds like paranoya to me. I think some people have too much time on their hands and they need to fill white space on the newspaper or website.

Really interesting article-though they do not actually tell you how the salmonella is contracted/passed to humans or for certain that it is the fish, snails plants or whatever OR if it is all tanks, or just fresh or just salt.
How much water have you swallowed trying to establish siphons? especially to get the overflows going? I should be writhing in salmonella about now, I guess. but will probably stop cleaning my skimmer, filter pads etc in the kitchen sink and using the garage sink instead. Wonder if my dogs could catch it????? Thats where I wash their bowls.

LOL - Right, and with my 8 fish tanks (almost 700 gallons total) I should plan my funeral now. LOL

Wait, maybe I am already dead.
I think there are things far more worth fearing.

I have swallowed more saltwater than imaginable. LOL
Everytime I go to syphon my tank to do a water change, (Each Week) I swallow some water. Does it just mean that little kids can get it. Thats what it sounded like to me. I agree with Granny, they don't answer anyones questions. Where exactly? Who exactly? How exactly? C-mon, get a little more detailed. It was cool to share. thanks diane.

Cows are natural carriers for salmonella. They shed it all the time in their stool. It only activates when they're stressed or immuno-depressed.
We eat cow.
Some indiginous species of aquatic turtles in the northeast are also natural carriers... which is why in the 80s and early 90s these were illegal as pets.
Cats are natural carriers of toxoplasmosis - they also shed this in their stool, which is why pregnant women are discouraged from cleaning litterboxes.
What's my point? EVERYTHING is dangerous. EVERYTHING can kill you. Just use good judgement and common sense. Wash your hands. Get yearly checkups.
Sheesh. Stupid media.

I agree, thats what I thought when I read it. I think it just gives the media something to talk about. Surprised to see such nonsense on NYT.

Is it possible that salmonilla is being introduced through fish food? I remember during the mad cow scare, that certain brands became unavailable because they were manufactured in England and contained some sort of cow part. I dunno. The people that came down with it probably overfed and undercleaned their tanks to begin with, but I'm certainly no scientist. :notsure:
